Rognan – The Local Cultural History

Rognan – The Local Cultural History

The tour begins by bus from Bodø, with the first stop at the spectacular Saltstraumen – the world’s strongest tidal current. A powerful natural experience that sets the tone for the rest of the journey.

The journey continues along the beautiful Skjerstadfjord, through small local communities and into Misvær, before we ascend into the open mountain landscape at Ljøsenhammeren. From there, the road leads down into the inland area and to Rognan in Saltdal.

Several highlights await in Rognan. We visit the Saltdal Rural Museum, where guests gain insight into local village culture and traditions. In the same area is the moving Blood Road Museum, which tells the powerful story of the prisoners of war who, during World War II, were forced to build roads and railways from Dunderlandsdalen south of the Saltfjellet mountains and northward through Saltdal.

Rognan also has a strong boatbuilding tradition. The calm climate and access to timber made the area ideal for producing masts and wooden boats. In winter, the tour includes a visit to a local craftsman who still builds traditional wooden boats by hand.
